I called Grace Andiki today to learn whether the current post-election problems affecting Kenya were having any repercussions in Got Matar, which is about one hour’s drive from Kisumu where news reports had spoken of serious violence and looting. Got Matar lies in Bondo District which is the birthplace of Raila Odinga, the Presidential candidate who claims to have been cheated out of victory.

Grace said that all was calm in Got Matar. The new block of 3 classrooms and the library has been completed and she is very pleased with the standard of construction. The first 100 new desks have also been delivered. The school would normally begin its second year’s classes on Monday 7th January, but she says that the term will start a week of two late because of the political situation and as travel restrictions are preventing staff from going to Nairobi to purchase text books and to buy material from which uniforms will be made locally.

Grace expressed her thanks to all donors who, together, have made it possible to stick to the planned construction schedule as well as to start the bursary scheme.

I would like to add my thanks for the great generosity shown by so many friends and relations, and to wish all who visit the website a very happy 2008!
