Third Beneficiary Under Community Housing Programme, IoT

The community housing programme (3rd house) roofing work is complete in East Yimbo location – Got Matar Village.

IoT students and staff planned Jedidah’s house (400 sq.ft) with her help. A total of 140 students, who are being taught to be masons, plumbers, electricians, blacksmiths, and carpenters, are engaged in this joint learning experience through hands-on learning.

Jedidah Atieno Owiti is a 54-year-old widow to the late Lawrence Awino Amara and a mother of one son (Denis Onyango Amara). Jedidah slipped into deep poverty after Lawrence (an electrician wireman) succumbed to HIV/AIDS in the year 2003, leaving her infected.

At the time of the GMCDG visit to her home, she was staying in a mad house about 150 meters from where the construction of her new house is currently going on and is the place where her house collapsed about 5 years ago, she also stated that the owners of the house where she was presently staying are late and their family rented her the building.

Her 31-year-old son, Denis Onyango Amara now married and is a form four graduate at Got Matar Secondary School and has not acquired any practical skills in any field. He works as unskilled labour on construction sites to make ends meet. Due to ill health, Jedidah cannot engage in any form of hard labor, and Denis is the sole family breadwinner.

This is the third house that the IoT students and staff are upgrading after it launched an initial programme for upgrading 30 deserving houses in the coming 3 years.
